It is a story that encourages profound reflection in each of us as to how we become who we are once we step outside the shadows of family. Educated, written by Tara Westover is a memoir documenting the struggles and learning process of a child raised in anti-government and radical religion to. While Educated is heart-wrenching at times, there are also incredibly tender moments of a brother leaving behind a beloved choir music CD for a sister, and her studying at a borrowed desk working toward her education.
I am grateful that such stories are being published as they are the stories that need to be heard.
Fundamentalism occurs throughout many major religions. Westover examines her childhood with unsparing clarity, and, more startlingly, with curiosity and love, even for those who have seriously failed or wronged her. Educated is Tara Westover’s gripping memoir about her unconventional upbringing and her journey toward education and independence. In fact, I hardly see it as a story of Mormonism at all, only a subtext that lingers in the background. Named Nonfiction Book of the Year by the American Booksellers Association Finalist for the John Leonard Prize from the National Book Critics Circle Award. And a lot of insane things happened as a result. The story of the Westovers is just one of many who lived through a recession, in economic hardship, with limited education, and mental illness. Publishing it was pretty much the most insane idea I’ve ever had. Instead of school, she helped her mother, a midwife and healer, to brew and sell herbal remedies. Although Tara eventually pursues an education and is accepted to the religious but prestigious Brigham Young University, she realizes there is a lot she does not know about the world.

It is also ironically about understanding how a small subset of those controlling media outlets hardly shows the full picture of what it means to be an American. Tara Westover was brought up in the mountains of Idaho, where her family prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches, guns, fuel and packing head-for-the-hills bags. It is not just about gender politics, racial wars, or gun control.
Stories such as Westover’s remind us of the privilege of education, and opportunities, and the real meaning of diversity. Educated Educated is primarily retrospective, consisting of Tara Westovers memories about her past.
